Ingredient spotlight: Rose Geranium essential oil
When you see the word Rose Geranium in the ingredient list on a simply bee product – it refers to the essential oil extracted from the Rose Geranium plant, usually the leaves.
This plant is native to the Cape provinces as well as the northern parts of South Africa. You will also find Rose Geranium in Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
Geranium oil is commonly used as an element in aromatherapy for its many health benefits. It’s used as a holistic treatment to improve your physical, mental and emotional health.
Back in ancient times Egyptians used geranium oil for promoting beautiful and radiant skin.
Geranium oil is now used in a wide range of skin care products to treat acne, reduce skin-inflammation, alleviate anxiety and balance hormones. This sweet-smelling oil is uplifting, lessens fatigue and promotes emotional wellness.
The word, Pelargonium, originated from the Greek ‘πελαργός pelargos’, meaning ‘Stork’. This plays on the alternative name for Pelarfoniums which is ‘Stork’s- bills’ and comes from the shape of the fruit. The specific epithet ‘graveolens’ refers to the strong smelling leaves.
Rose Geranium is a medium sized shrub and grows erect, is multi-branched shrub and can grow up to 1,5m with a spread of 1m.
The leaves are deeply incised, velvety and soft to the touch. The flowers vary from pale pink to almost white and the plant blooms from August to January.
The extracted essential oil of the Rose Geranium is safe for most to use on the skin. It contains antibacterial, antimicrobial and anti-aging agents. The gentle scent of rose is pleasant and relaxing. Rose Geranium is one of the ingredients in 10 of Simply bee’s skin care products and is a firm favourite with our customers.
